Renowned host Galilea Montijo experienced moments of uncertainty after the impact of Hurricane John, as she was unable to communicate with her son. The devastating Hurricane John, which hit the coast of Acapulco in September 2024, not only caused material damage, but also emotional damage. Galilea Montijo, the popular television presenter, experienced moments of great anguish as she was unable to contact her son or her ex-husband for hours after the disaster. Her moving statements reflect the reality that thousands of people faced after the tragedy. Hurricane John, classified as Category 3, made landfall on September 23, a day earlier than predicted. It left a trail of destruction in Acapulco and Oaxaca, causing landslides and flooding that affected more than 270,000 people.
According to the National Meteorological Service, heavy rains were the main cause of the damage, with rainfall equivalent to a year’s worth recorded in just a few days. In addition, at least 15 people have died as a result of the hurricane. Galilea Montijo, in a brief interview with TikToker Gonzalo Palacios, expressed her sadness at what happened and mentioned her concern about not being able to communicate with her son and her ex-husband Fernando Reina, who were in Acapulco during the storm. “Thank God, the father contacted her and they are fine. They had a bad time,” she said, visibly affected, while sharing her desire to meet with them as soon as possible.
After Montijo’s statements, her followers were quick to show her support through social media. Messages ranged from prayers to wishes for a quick reunion with her family. “Mateo, God take care of him,” wrote a user about Galilea’s son in the TikToker’s post. Another user added: “Blessings Gali and to all the brothers, God with you and all of Acapulco.”
These types of responses underscore the close bond that many celebrities like Galilea have formed with their audiences, especially in difficult times. Montijo is no stranger to these types of situations. In 2023, after Hurricane Otis passed, she also traveled to Acapulco to make sure her family was okay. On that occasion, she was unable to contact her son for several hours, causing great distress. Upon returning to Mexico City, she described the scene in Acapulco as “devastating” and asked her followers for solidarity with the victims.
Authorities confirmed that more than 15 people died due to Hurricane John, and the Acapulco resort, which was just beginning to recover from Hurricane Otis, again suffered severe flooding. The storm affected both the local population and tourists, who were stranded in the city. Claudia Sheinbaum, President-elect of Mexico, announced her commitment to provide all possible assistance to the affected communities.
