We sometimes become accustomed to hearing country music legends singing on their own. We think of those individuals, such as Hank Williams Junior or Willie Nelson, and we know they sometimes sing with others but their solo work is what sticks out in our minds.
The same can also be said for some of the most powerful female country music singers as well. Consider the fact that Dolly Parton often sings on her own, except for some fantastic work with Kenny Rogers. Reba McEntire is also a well-known solo artist.
This changed for a bit in 2021, however, when Reba McEntire joined forces with Dolly Parton and recorded a song together. Despite the fact that they have each performed with countless other people over the years, it’s amazing to think that they never sang a song with each other.
The song that was selected for their unique collaboration was a classic duet originally sung by Reba McEntire and Linda Davis in 1993. That song, ‘Does He Love You’ became a huge hit.
The track itself was written by Sandy Knox and Billy Stritch, and it is a story about a wife and the mistress of a man who are singing back and forth to each other. They are asking the question: ‘Does he love you, like he loves me?’ It was a powerful song, to say the least.
The version that Reba McEntire sang with Dolly Parton was a single from a three-disc compilation release, Revived Remixed Revisited. It wasn’t long before it was being played on the radio regularly.
Dolly Parton did give the collaboration kudos, saying that the song turned out ‘really good’. She went on to say how she always wanted to sing with Reba and didn’t know why they didn’t until that song. She was sure that fans would love it.
McEntire also had something to say about it, mentioning how it was amazing that they had never sung together. She said that she went on programs to sing for Dolly Parton and she has done that for her, but singing together is ‘kinda weird’.
