The lips are a delicate area of the face, and any change in their appearance, such as the appearance of white spots, can cause discomfort or concern. Although they are usually harmless, these spots can have a variety of causes, ranging from normal skin conditions to signs of infection or hormonal imbalances.
Below, we explain the main reasons why white spots appear on the lips, how to identify them, and what to do in each case.
Fordyce Spots (Visible Sebaceous Glands)
Fordyce spots are small white or yellow bumps that appear naturally on the lips, mainly on the lip border.
🟢 They are neither dangerous nor contagious.
📌 They are simply visible sebaceous glands, most common in teenagers and young adults.
✅ Treatment: They generally do not require treatment. If they cause cosmetic discomfort, they can be treated with laser or topical creams under medical supervision.
Cold Sore
Although acne is more common on other parts of the face, it can also appear near the lips.
📌 It can be due to clogged pores, the use of oily lipstick, or poor facial hygiene.
✅ Treatment: Wash your face with a gentle cleanser, avoid touching your lips, and use non-comedogenic balms. If they persist, a dermatologist may recommend creams with benzoyl peroxide or salicylic acid.
Cold Sore
Herpes simplex type 1 (HSV-1) can begin as white bumps that develop into painful blisters.
🔴 It is contagious and is usually accompanied by itching or burning before the lesions appear.
