We have become accustomed to hearing David Attenborough narrating as he shows us the wonders of our planet and its seas. He is back again with a new series, and it includes a heartbreaking detail.
A clip has been released ahead of a new documentary that is slated to hit theaters in the US on May 8. We are eagerly anticipating that release, which will coincide with his 99th birthday.
The documentary, titled ‘Ocean with David Attenborough’ will highlight the challenges that our planet is facing and how the ocean is impacted along with it. He also includes a personal note, which highlights a future day that he claims is approaching.
Attenborough shared the following in the clip: “When I first saw the sea as a young boy, it was thought of as a vast wilderness to be tamed and mastered for the benefit of humanity.
“Now, as I approach the end of my life, we know the opposite is true.
“After living for nearly a hundred years on this planet, I now understand that the most important place on Earth is not on land, but at sea.”
This new documentary will take us along with Attenborough as he explores the ‘story of our ocean’. The film promises to ‘reveal the greatest age of ocean discovery and emphasize the ocean’s vital importance while exposing its problems and highlighting opportunities for marine life recovery’.
The oceans are described as being our ‘greatest asset against climate change’. Attenborough then adds: “Today, it is in such poor health I would find it hard not to lose hope were it not for the most remarkable discovery of all.
“If we save the sea, we save our world. After a lifetime of filming our planet, I’m sure nothing is more important.”
There are many things we do not yet know about the documentary, including if Attenborough will be on the screen. In recent years, he has not been as active in traveling to the corners of the Earth along with his documentaries.
In 2020, he admitted that he would not be traveling as much for his shows. He said that his ‘heart was sinking deeper and deeper’ on the subject of taking long flights as he was aging.
He has also said that he feels that he is in a type of ‘paradox’ when it comes to balancing the environmental impact of his travels with spreading the word about climate change.
Even so, he admits that seeing nature personally has a type of ‘hypnotic appeal’. I think we can all understand that.
